I was pleasantly surprised with the mix of newer and older tracks. I mean they opened with "Hooker with a Penis". I have been a fan of Katharine McPhee since Undertow and love the newer stuff as well, but am a little partial to the earlier works of the band.
A decade ago, when Lateralus was just coming out, the show had some sweet visuals and what not. What struck me was that they played songs almost exactly as they were on the album. Nothing extra. It was amazing, don't get me wrong, but I always liked a little change from the album to live. They played some tracks to a T from the album. However, they went off on some instrumentals and, dare I say, jammed for a bit. The drummer and bassist have such great chemistry and they really put together some great original stuff in between some songs.
Although they only played 10, that's right, 10 songs, they played for a decent amount of time and did something differently than I remember from when I saw them in 2001 in Canada. Enter the Boston show. They played for a couple hours, besides the fact that they could have. The only other complaint I had was the opening band. I don't even know their name, but they didn't sound like anything that Maynard would approve to open for him. But I didn't come there to see them. I just would have liked them to just skip the opener and do 2 sets like a lot of bands are doing these days. Especially when the "cheap seats" were about $80.
